Bicester Local History Society Social Event

Date: 17th January 2005
Speaker:

Members of Bicester Local History Society met at ‘The Pop-In’, Crown Walk, Bicester for their annual January Social Event at 7.30 p.m. on Monday 17th January. Twenty members took advantage of the opportunity to take a close look at a selection of the resources and materials that the Society currently holds in its archives.

Bob Hessian outlined the forthcoming programme of events that the Society would undertake over the following year and highlighted the various resources that were available for examination at the Meeting. The display of exhibits assembled enabled those present to review a selection of Bicester town maps, photographs depicting Bicester ‘Then and Now’, and various reference books relating to the local history of the town and the county. Examples of the Bicester School Magazine were available for inspection and photographs of former pupils. The photographic archive relating to ‘Bicester Listed Buildings’ was displayed and magazines from the Oxfordshire Local History Association were available for reference. Examples of Roman pottery from the villa site at Southwold were also displayed.

Various Society members kindly contributed to the display by bringing along a selection of their own treasures for the Meeting to examine. These included what appeared to be a Roman lamp, a savings device and a collection of local sale posters and town directories.

Refreshments were provided at the event and a raffle was organised to support Society funds. The Meeting closed at 9:15 pm.
